Housing Problems

prod. EH Anstey, Arthur Elton, 13 mins, 1935 (UK)

Film from the British Documentary Movement, notable for the fact that real people are heard speaking to camera in an interview-style format that has become the basic ingredient of much modern documentary and current affairs programming. Although the words appear stilted and the piece is essentially a piece of government propaganda, it's refreshing to listen to these anecdotes, rather than the "voice of God" narration that had been prevalent up to this point. Rants about crooked stairways and giant rats add an unintentionally humorous element, although there is also some genuine sadness here. ***
